Madras Courier, the city’s first newspaper was published on October 12,
1785. It was a weekly publication founded by Richard Johnston, a printer
with the East India Company, and carried official information relating
to the Madras Presidency in not more than four or six pages. The Madras
Gazette, Government Gazette and other new publications cropped up
causing the Madras Courier to wind up its operations in 1821.
